The Abbey, located just an hour away from Dublin, Ireland, stands as an iconic period building with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Over the years, this venue has witnessed the passage of time and evolved under the influence of various occupiers. Notably, in the mid-18th century, a chapel was added to the site, further enhancing its historical significance.

 

Recognising the need to preserve and celebrate this rich heritage, Canola Studio was entrusted by the client to undertake a transformative project. Their mission: to breathe new life into the interiors of all the reception spaces, function and dining rooms, the iconic chapel itself, as well 38 guest bedrooms. The ultimate goal was to craft a unique and immersive experience in the various spaces, tailored to host large weddings and events.

One of the principal challenges was to strike a delicate balance between the old-world charm intrinsic to The Abbey and the infusion of a contemporary aesthetic. The collaboration between Canola Studio and the client was instrumental in achieving this delicate equilibrium. Throughout the renovation process, the building gradually unveiled hidden design treasures that spoke to its extensive history. The result is a harmonious blend of the past and the present, where the charm of bygone eras coexists seamlessly with modern design elements.

 

The interiors of The Abbey now reflect a thoughtful curation of historical details that have been both preserved and elevated. The building's extensive history is not just acknowledged but celebrated, with hints of its journey incorporated into the design.
